LIfe Coaching
by Maureen Pelton

None of us are born with a guidebook that provides explicit rules for thought and behavior that will enable us to navigate life successfully. So, we create behaviors and beliefs that help us cope with the myriad of complexities to which all of humanity is subject.

As we mature, we realize that growth and health require changing those behaviors and beliefs. We are asked to transform ourselves and live outside our comfort zones. Any initial discomfort we experience when expanding our comfort zones diminishes gradually as we both become accustomed to change and begin to understand that temporary discomfort is a small price to pay for the evolution of our soul. Your current comfort zone did, at one time, serve a purpose in your life. But it is representative of behaviors and patterns of thought that empowered you to cope with challenges of days past.

Now, this comfort zone does little to facilitate the growth you wish to achieve in the present. Leaving your comfort zone behind through personal expansion of any kind can prepare you to take the larger leaps of faith that will, in time, help you refine your purpose. Life Coaching is a service that can support you in your transformational process and intention setting.

What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching is a modality that supports people in reaching their personal and/or professional goals by focusing on the present and the future. The coaching process does not involve diagnosing or treating clinical conditions. Coaching offers focus, structure and support toward achieving personal and/or professional goals, deepening learning, improving performance, and enhancing quality of life. Life coaching is anchored in a partnership between client and coach that is characterized by trust and mutual respect. Life coaches discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve. Life coaches encourage client self-discovery, elicit client-generated solutions and strategies and hold the client accountable while providing tools, support and structure.

What is the structure of Life Coaching?

Life coaching can be highly individualized and is most often conducted by telephone. Standard practice includes an intake session of one to two hours followed by weekly contact of one-half hour usually over the telephone for a minimum of three months. After the initial three months, the commitment is month by month. Additional contact may be in the form of emails or group sessions. Some coaching does include in-person sessions. Typically, a contract is signed by client and coach defining the parameters.

What are the benefits of Life Coaching?

Individuals, who want to grow, improve their life/career skills, solve specific non-clinical problems and realize their full potential can benefit from life coaching. Clients are able to clarify, set and achieve goals with more focus and speed while receiving guidance, compassion and encouragement from their coach. Dreams can be realized.
